Our trip to the UK and Ireland in March 2004 provided John and me with many great photo ops. We were particularly drawn to the architecture, especially the churches. One particular stand-out was this domed chapel which looms over the village of Giggleswick.
It's not normally open to the public so I only got some outside shots, but there's some interesting info on the chapel to be found on the web, including an early photo taken a few years after its completion in 1901, some photos of the pipe organ restoration project including one of the interior of the dome, and of course the inevitable Wikipedia entry on the Giggleswick School.
This photo was taken towards the end of our trip by which time I was starting to get comfortable with the Digital Rebel 300D. I used the 18-55mm kit lens instead of the 28-135mm IS as the shot begged for a wide field of view that not was possible even at 28mm with the camera's 1.6x mag factor (roughly 45mm equivalent). I have come to really enjoy this little lens - it's not L-glass, not particularly fast, has no image stabilization like the kit lenses that ship with the newer Rebels, but I've taken some pretty sharp outdoor photos with it over the years. I now keep the 18-55mm
on the 300D body most of the time for use as a secondary rig to my 40D.
Conversion to monochrome in Aperture, with 55/70/-25 RGB filtering, plus a touch of Sepia (0.1) and Vignette. Hindsight is of course 20/20, but I am kicking myself in the ass for not shooting RAW during this trip. I've submitted this photo to the TWIP forum on Flickr just for giggles (no pun intended...).
