Adventures in Macro Photography

Some macro shakedown tests of the Tokina AT-X 100mm f/2.8 PRO-D. Taking advantage of some good morning light I rattled off almost 300 shots to get a better feel for not only the lens but the new Canon EOS 40D body as well. Almost all of the shots were bracketed as I spot metered on various things (rock, wood, sky) and adjusted AE compensation to try to get a feel for what delivers the best exposures and depths-of-field in different situations.

I'm working hard at improving my understanding of exposure, and while I often have to take a gazillion shots before I get it right, I always try to think before I shoot... and every now and then it works. I look at the histogram and get rewarded with a nice, broad and centered tonal distribution on the first shot. These images are just part of that learning process and not meant to be artsy-fartsy or anything.

Anyway, the first and last photos are of... well, whatever the hell it is that's growing all over the giant rock in our front yard; the middle photo was just some tree droppings on my deck with which I was honing my manual focusing skills.
